Museums are known for cataloging, preserving, and storing historical artifacts found across the world. As time progresses, the collections continue to grow and these museums boast about the thousands and millions of artifacts stored in their collections, but how much of those collections are actually available to view? In the graphic below, hover over each museum to learn more about the accessibility of the Smithsonian’s collections. Together, the eight collections below have a total of 44,520 artifacts, and only 9% is currently on exhibit.
Note: Of the 32 collections labeled in the Smithsonian Open Access API, only 10 returned results with the "on_view" tag. 2 of those institutions were then removed due to being extreme outliers relative to the other collection sizes.
